In a world where visual storytelling continues to evolve, Cornish artist Nick Williams is creating paintings that invite audiences to look beyond the surface and enter a world of colour, atmosphere and imagination.
Known for his distinctive use of texture and richly layered oil paintings, Williams transforms traditional figurative art into immersive visual experiences. His works are built through a unique process of adding, removing and rebuilding layers of paint, creating heavily impasto surfaces that give each piece a powerful physical presence.
Creating Stories Through Colour and Texture
For Williams, painting is not simply about capturing an image — it is about creating a feeling. His work explores the connection between place, memory and imagination, often presenting scenes that feel familiar yet slightly dreamlike. Combining elements of figurative painting with magic realism, his artworks encourage viewers to discover their own stories within each composition.
Influenced by masters including Vuillard, Velázquez, Van Gogh, Vermeer, Anselm Kiefer, Paula Rego and Peter Doig, Williams draws inspiration from both historical painting traditions and contemporary approaches to storytelling. His work reflects a fascination with atmosphere, colour and the emotional impact of a scene.
“I’m mainly trying to create a feeling of place and atmosphere,” explains Williams, whose paintings often carry a sense of mystery and narrative. His creative approach allows everyday environments to become imagined worlds, filled with subtle details and unexpected moments.
Inspired by Cornwall
Based in Cornwall, Williams finds inspiration in the natural surroundings of his garden studio, where his artistic practice continues to develop. His connection to nature and observation of the world around him influence a collection defined by vibrant colour, intense textures and a unique sense of place.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Williams’ practice is his willingness to experiment. His exploration of unconventional materials, including the use of snakeskin inspired by his years caring for corn snakes, reflects his curiosity and desire to push beyond traditional artistic boundaries.
A self-taught artist, Williams has developed an individual style outside the conventional path of formal art education. His independent journey has led to important milestones, including his 2023 solo exhibition at 54 The Gallery in Shepherd Market, Mayfair.
Today, Nick Williams continues to create works that celebrate imagination, storytelling and the emotional power of painting. Through his layered surfaces and vivid visual worlds, he reminds audiences that art is not only something to observe — it is something to experience.
Nick Williams’ garden studio is also being opened to visitors through The National Garden Scheme, offering a rare opportunity to explore the environment that continues to inspire his artistic vision.
