Ensemble Erik and Philip Glass Bring Minimalism to Life This September
This September, a bold new name enters the UK’s classical music scene. Ensemble Erik, founded by conductor John Beswick, will debut with two live performances celebrating Philip Glass.
The concerts take place at Hackney Church in London (Sept 23) and Stoller Hall in Manchester (Sept 25). Each evening includes two shows, one at 6 PM and another at 8 PM. These events aim to reintroduce minimalist music to modern audiences in an immersive and accessible way.
Who Is Ensemble Erik?
Founded by the acclaimed conductor John Beswick, Ensemble Erik takes its name from Erik Satie, the French avant-garde composer who helped shape modern minimalism. Beswick, known for his work with Pimlico Opera, West End productions, and collaborations with Damon Albarn and the Icelandic National Opera, aims to connect new audiences with classical sound through innovation and bold programming.
“The next stage is to introduce abstract visuals aligned with musical textures—like a form of audio-visual mindfulness.” – John Beswick
The Programme: Pure Glass, Pure Impact
The concerts will include The Windcatcher (for six saxophones) and Glassworks, both performed with original instrumentation including reeds, horns, strings, piano, and keyboard. Audiences can expect a powerful blend of sonic architecture and emotional resonance—brought to life in two of the UK’s most atmospheric venues.
These performances offer more than just listening — they offer a new way of listening.
More Than Minimalism: A Vision Beyond the Debut
John Beswick’s journey into minimalism began during his time at Oxford University, where he studied the legacy of Erik Satie and its influence on American experimental composers. Now, Ensemble Erik emerges as a result of that long artistic inquiry.
Looking ahead, Beswick plans to expand the group’s repertoire with works by Steve Reich, as well as multimedia projects including silent film accompaniment (such as City Lights) and live scoring of Satie’s Entr’acte.
He also has a sister project in development: Green Octopus Band, focused on original crossover compositions blending classical textures with contemporary influences.
